Overview

Crater Lakes, Semuliki Forest, Chimpanzees and Mountain Gorillas

This twelve-day mid-range safari goes deeper into western Uganda than the usual highlights, combining wildlife, rainforest, volcanic crater lakes, cultural heritage and scenic relaxation. You begin at Entebbe and drive to Fort Portal, a town surrounded by tea plantations, the Rwenzori Mountains and crater lakes.

You explore the crater-lake region and the Amabere caves, track chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, and spend a full day in Semuliki National Park, a lowland tropical rainforest with rich birdlife and the Sempaya hot springs. You then continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and a Kazinga Channel cruise, search Ishasha for tree-climbing lions and trek to mountain gorillas in Bwindi.

The trip slows down at Lake Bunyonyi and ends at Lake Mburo before the drive back to Entebbe. It suits travellers with a particular interest in Semuliki’s forest and the Fort Portal crater lakes.

Highlights

  • Fort Portal crater lakes: Explore volcanic crater lakes and viewpoints around Fort Portal, with the Amabere caves and nearby waterfalls.
  • Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale: Enter the forest with experienced guides to find a habituated chimpanzee community.
  • Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary: Take a guided community and nature walk for birds, monkeys and conservation stories.
  • Semuliki and Sempaya hot springs: Walk a lowland tropical rainforest linked to the forests of Central Africa and visit the hot springs.

  • Gorilla trekking in Bwindi: Spend one permitted hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family.
  • Lake Bunyonyi and Lake Mburo: Relax among islands and terraced hills, then finish with zebras, giraffes and impalas.

  • MealsDinner, depending on arrival time

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport you are welcomed by your professional Bespoke Safaris driver-guide, helped with your luggage and transferred to your hotel in Entebbe, a relaxed lakeside town on Lake Victoria.

Depending on your arrival time, you can take a leisurely walk around the town, visit a local craft shop or rest after your flight. If you arrive early, optional activities such as a visit to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens or a sunset by Lake Victoria can be arranged.

In the evening your guide briefs you on the safari, including the route, planned activities and what to prepare for chimpanzee and gorilla trekking. Dinner and a restful night before you head into western Uganda tomorrow.

  • Tour durationFull day by road
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in Fort Portal
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you leave Entebbe for Fort Portal, one of Uganda’s most scenic towns and the gateway to the crater lakes, Kibale Forest and the Semuliki region. The road passes busy trading centres and farming communities, then green countryside, rolling hills and tea plantations.

Along the way you see everyday rural life, with roadside markets, small farms and communities that introduce Uganda’s cultural and agricultural heritage. You have lunch at a suitable restaurant on the route.

Near Fort Portal the scenery becomes more dramatic, with the Rwenzori Mountains sometimes visible on clear days and clusters of crater lakes formed by ancient volcanic activity. You check in at your lodge and relax, and depending on your arrival time your guide may arrange a short visit to a viewpoint or a leisurely walk around the lodge. Dinner and overnight in Fort Portal.

  • Tour durationFull day exploring
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in Fort Portal
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you explore the crater-lake landscape around Fort Portal, a region of volcanic depressions, some filled with water and ringed by steep green slopes, farmland and rural settlements. The lakes are good for photography and nature walks and for appreciating the geology of western Uganda.

You visit selected crater-lake viewpoints around the Fort Portal and Ndali-Kasenda area, depending on road conditions, access and how far you want to walk, with panoramic views and stops to learn how the crater landscape formed.

You may also visit the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves and nearby waterfalls, linked to local cultural traditions and oral histories, on a guided walk through the area. Paths can be slippery, especially after rain, so wear suitable footwear.

Through the day you pass small farms, banana plantations and traditional homesteads, and you may stop at a local community or walk to a scenic viewpoint. After lunch you continue at a relaxed pace and return to the lodge for the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in Fort Portal.

  • Tour durationMorning tracking and afternoon wetland walk
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in Fort Portal
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After an early breakfast you transfer to Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzee tracking. Kibale is known for its primate diversity and tropical forest, and is one of Uganda’s leading places to see wild chimpanzees.

At the park headquarters the ranger guides brief you on forest safety, chimpanzee behaviour and responsible viewing. You then enter the forest with an experienced guide to look for a habituated chimpanzee community. You may meet other primates and many birds on the way, while your guide explains the forest ecosystem and conservation. The length of the trek depends on where the chimpanzees are. When they are found, you have the permitted viewing time to watch their social interactions, feeding and movement through the canopy.

After lunch you go to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided community and nature walk, subject to the selected activity arrangements. The wetland is known for its birdlife, vegetation and additional primates, and a local guide explains how it connects with the surrounding communities and conservation work, including community-based tourism. In the late afternoon you return to the lodge for dinner and the night.

  • Tour durationFull day excursion
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in Fort Portal
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you leave for Semuliki National Park through the scenic countryside of the Bundibugyo region. The road runs towards the western side of the Rwenzori Mountains, and the landscape changes as you descend into the Semuliki Valley near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Semuliki is notable for its lowland tropical rainforest and its biological links with the forests of Central Africa, a very different environment from the montane forests of Kibale and Bwindi, with distinctive vegetation, birdlife and forest habitats. On arrival you meet your local ranger guide and take a guided forest walk, depending on park conditions and the chosen trail. Your guide interprets the vegetation, birdlife and ecology, and birdwatchers may find it especially rewarding, although individual sightings cannot be guaranteed.

A highlight is the Sempaya hot springs. You follow the designated trails with your guide to learn about the geothermal activity behind them and their place in local cultural traditions. Please follow ranger instructions and stay within the visitor areas. With time left, you may add forest interpretation or birdwatching before leaving the park, and lunch is arranged around the day’s activities.

In the afternoon you return to Fort Portal through the valley and surrounding countryside for dinner and a rest after a day in the forest.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon game drive
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you check out and leave Fort Portal for Queen Elizabeth National Park through western Uganda’s changing landscapes, passing rural communities, farmland and views of the Rwenzori region. Near the park the scenery opens into savannah grassland, woodland and wetlands that support a wide range of wildlife.

You check in at your lodge, have lunch and rest before an afternoon game drive, depending on your arrival time and park access. You explore selected tracks for Uganda kobs, elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, waterbucks and other wildlife, and with luck lions or other predators resting in the grass. The park is also rich in birdlife and varied habitats.

Your guide helps you read animal behaviour and tracks and explains the park’s ecology. Sightings vary with the season, weather and animal movements, so the aim is to enjoy the whole experience. You return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationMorning game drive and afternoon boat cruise
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After an early breakfast you go on a morning game drive on the Kasenyi plains, one of Queen Elizabeth National Park’s well-known wildlife areas. The open grassland gives you a chance to see elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, warthogs and other savannah species, and predators such as lions may appear, depending on animal movements. Your guide explains how grazers, predators and habitats relate, and the cooler early hours are good for photography.

You return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest, then go to the Kazinga Channel for an afternoon boat cruise. The waterway links Lake George and Lake Edward and draws a remarkable concentration of wildlife to its banks. From the boat you may see hippos in the water, Nile crocodiles on the shore, buffaloes grazing near the water and elephants coming to drink, along with many waterbirds.

The cruise offers a different perspective from the morning drive and plenty of chances for photographs. You return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationGame drive and transfer to Bwindi
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge near the confirmed Bwindi trekking sector
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you travel through the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park to the Ishasha sector, famous for tree-climbing lions that are sometimes seen resting in large fig trees. Your guide explores suitable tracks in search of them and also looks for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs and other wildlife. Sightings of the lions are not guaranteed, but the sector is rewarding for its open savannah scenery and as a less-visited part of the park.

You then continue towards Bwindi through the countryside of south-western Uganda, where the landscape turns to steep hills, cultivated slopes, rural settlements and increasingly dense vegetation as you near the forested highlands.

You check in at your lodge in the right Bwindi trekking sector. The lodge is chosen according to your confirmed gorilla permit, because Bwindi has several trekking sectors and transfers between them can be long. Dinner and an early night before tomorrow’s trek.

  • Tour durationTrek of several hours
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge near the confirmed Bwindi trekking sector
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After an early breakfast you transfer to the park headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing, where rangers explain the procedures, safety guidelines and conservation rules for the encounter. You then enter the forest with experienced rangers and trackers to look for a habituated mountain gorilla family. Bwindi’s dense vegetation, steep slopes and forest trails make the trek rewarding but sometimes demanding, and its length depends on where the gorillas have moved during the day.

Along the way your ranger explains the forest and may point out feeding traces, nests and other signs of its biodiversity. When the gorillas are found, you spend the permitted one hour with them from the required distance, and you may see family members feeding, grooming, resting or interacting. It is an extraordinary chance to see these endangered primates in their habitat and to understand why the forests they depend on must be protected.

After the trek you return to the headquarters and your lodge for lunch or a late meal, depending on how long the trek took, then rest. If you have the time and energy, an optional community or cultural visit can be arranged at an extra cost. Dinner and overnight near Bwindi.

  • Tour durationDrive and relaxed afternoon
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge at Lake Bunyonyi
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you leave Bwindi for Lake Bunyonyi, one of south-western Uganda’s most scenic lakes, through the highlands around Kabale with their terraced hillsides, cultivated slopes and rural settlements.

You check in at your lakeside lodge and have lunch overlooking the water. The lake is known for its many small islands, green hills and peaceful atmosphere, and it is an ideal place to unwind after the gorilla trek.

In the afternoon you enjoy a guided boat excursion across the lake, subject to the selected package, passing between the islands and learning about local communities, traditional livelihoods and stories linked to the lake. Alternatively, you can take a guided lakeside walk, go birdwatching or relax at the lodge, and optional canoeing and other activities can be arranged. As evening comes, enjoy the quiet and the views over the hills. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon game drive
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in or near Lake Mburo National Park
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After breakfast you leave Lake Bunyonyi for Lake Mburo National Park through south-western Uganda’s highlands and pastoral countryside. Along the way you may see traditional cattle-keeping communities and the long-horned Ankole cattle that are part of the region’s cultural identity.

Depending on timing, you may stop for lunch at a suitable restaurant or cultural centre before continuing to the park. You check in at your lodge and prepare for an afternoon wildlife activity. Depending on your arrival time, you go on a game drive through the savannah and woodland, where Lake Mburo is known for zebras, impalas, elands, topis, buffaloes, warthogs and giraffes, along with many birds. Your guide helps you spot wildlife and explains how the animals use the different habitats.

If you arrive too late for a worthwhile drive, it can be moved to the next morning, subject to your departure schedule and park arrangements. Dinner and overnight at the lodge on your last night in Uganda’s wildlife areas.

  • Tour durationMorning activity and full day by road
  • MealsBreakfast & lunch, depending on your departure schedule

After an early breakfast you take a final wildlife activity in Lake Mburo National Park, depending on your departure time. Options include a morning game drive or a guided nature walk with an authorised ranger, subject to availability and the final itinerary. Either gives another chance to enjoy the landscape and look for zebras, impalas, giraffes, buffaloes and other wildlife, and a walk shows you animal tracks, vegetation and smaller parts of the ecosystem. The choice depends on your interests, fitness and time.

You then leave the park for the drive to Entebbe. If your schedule allows, you can stop at the Equator crossing at Kayabwe for photographs, a short visit to the monument and a look at the local craft shops.

You continue to Entebbe International Airport or your hotel. The road journey takes several hours, and the departure plan is built around your confirmed flight time. For international departures, an early start is recommended to allow for traffic, rest stops and check-in.

This itinerary is a guide. Driving times depend on road and weather conditions, and your permits decide the chimpanzee and gorilla dates and the Bwindi sector.
