Overview

Rift Valley Lakes, Hell's Gate and the Maasai Mara

This five-day safari combines the freshwater beauty of Lake Naivasha, the cliffs and gorges of Hell’s Gate National Park and the open plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It starts in Nairobi with a drive down into the Great Rift Valley and ends with a visit to the Giraffe Centre before your flight.

You see wildlife by boat, on foot and on game drives, and you spend a full day in the Mara searching for the Big Five. A visit to a Maasai community adds a cultural side to the trip, so it suits first-time visitors who want a compact introduction to Kenya.

Highlights

  • Lake Naivasha boat safari: Look for hippos and waterbirds such as fish eagles, pelicans and herons.
  • Crescent Island walking safari: Walk among giraffes, zebras and wildebeest with an authorised local guide.
  • Hell's Gate National Park: Explore towering cliffs, deep gorges and geothermal landscapes on foot, or by bicycle if you choose.
  • Maasai Mara game drives: Spend a full day searching for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards and rhinos.
  • Great Migration: Depending on the season, you may see large herds of wildebeest and zebras.
  • Maasai cultural visit: Learn about pastoral life, beadwork and dance from community hosts.
  • Giraffe Centre: Learn about the conservation of the endangered Rothschild's giraffe.

  • Tour durationDrive to the lake, boat safari in the afternoon
  • AccommodationLodge near Lake Naivasha
  • MealsLunch & dinner

You are welcomed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by your Bespoke Safaris representative and, after a short briefing, set off in your private 4×4 Land Cruiser towards Lake Naivasha. The road leads into the Great Rift Valley, with a stop at a viewpoint over the valley floor, the distant escarpments and the volcanic landscape.

You reach your lodge in time for check-in and lunch, subject to your arrival time. In the afternoon you take a boat safari on the lake, looking for hippos and waterbirds including fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants and herons.

If lake conditions and access allow, you continue to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary for a guided walking safari among giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and waterbucks. Sightings are not guaranteed, and the walking routes follow local safety guidance. Dinner and overnight beside the lake.

  • Tour durationMorning in the park, afternoon drive
  • AccommodationLodge or tented camp in the Maasai Mara area
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

After an early breakfast you check out and drive to Hell’s Gate National Park, known for its cliffs, rock formations, deep gorges and geothermal features. Unlike most safari parks, parts of Hell’s Gate can be explored on foot or by bicycle, subject to park rules and current safety advice. Look for zebras, gazelles, giraffes and elands on the plains, while your guide explains how volcanic activity shaped the landscape. Bicycle hire is optional and should be confirmed in advance.

You then continue southwest towards the Maasai Mara through the Rift Valley countryside and the town of Narok, passing rural settlements and Maasai herders with their livestock. The drive takes several hours, so your arrival time decides how much of an introductory game drive you can fit in.

You check in at your lodge or tented camp and, if time and park access allow, head out for a short game drive. Dinner and overnight in the Mara area.

  • Tour durationFull day of game drives
  • AccommodationLodge or tented camp in the Maasai Mara
  • MealsBreakfast, picnic lunch & dinner

After an early breakfast you set out for a full day in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa’s most famous safari destinations. Its rolling grasslands, scattered acacia trees and riverine habitats support a wide variety of wildlife.

On the morning game drive you search for the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos. Lions and elephants are often easier to find, while leopards and rhinos are more elusive. You also look for wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, gazelles and hyenas, and if your visit coincides with the Great Migration you may see large herds on the move. Specific sightings and river crossings cannot be guaranteed.

You stop for a picnic lunch at an authorised site and, if conditions allow, visit the Mara River, where hippos and Nile crocodiles live. Follow your guide’s instructions near the water. You spend the afternoon in other parts of the reserve and return to camp in the late afternoon for dinner.

  • Tour durationGame drives in the morning and afternoon, cultural visit in between
  • AccommodationLodge or tented camp in the Maasai Mara
  • MealsBreakfast, lunch & dinner

Start with an early morning game drive, when the cooler air and soft light are good for wildlife and photography. Explore the plains and river areas for lions, cheetahs, hyenas, elephants and giraffes, then return to camp for breakfast and some free time.

In the afternoon you visit a local Maasai community, where your hosts introduce you to daily life, family traditions, beadwork, local architecture and the importance of cattle. You may also watch traditional dancing, including the well-known jumping dance. Take photographs only with permission, and any crafts you buy support the artisans directly.

If time and park rules allow, you return to the reserve for a final game drive as the light fades. Dinner and your last night in the Mara.

  • Tour durationSeveral hours by road
  • MealsBreakfast & lunch

After breakfast you check out and drive back to Nairobi through the Mara region and the countryside beyond. Travel time depends on where you stay, the road conditions and traffic, and you may make scenic stops on the way.

On arrival you visit the Giraffe Centre in Karen, if your arrival time, opening hours and flight allow. The centre promotes conservation education and raises awareness about the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. Any feeding experience follows the centre’s visitor rules.

You then have lunch in Nairobi if time permits, with a restaurant in Karen as one option, before your driver takes you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The day is planned around your flight, and if it leaves early the Giraffe Centre and lunch may be shortened or left out.

This itinerary is a guide. Driving times depend on traffic, weather and road conditions, and the last day is planned around your flight time.
