Overview

From the Nile to the Rainforest

This twelve-day journey is built for travellers who want the best of Uganda in one holiday: wildlife, rainforest, scenic lakes and a warm welcome from local communities. It starts at the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park and finishes with a game drive on the grasslands of Lake Mburo.

You watch the Nile force its way through a narrow gorge at Murchison Falls, go on game drives and take a boat cruise on the river. You track chimpanzees in Kibale, search for lions around Queen Elizabeth National Park, cruise the Kazinga Channel and look for tree-climbing lions in Ishasha. Then you trek to a habituated mountain gorilla family in Bwindi.

After the trek you rest at Lake Bunyonyi, with its terraced hills and scattered islands, before a final game drive at Lake Mburo and the drive back to Kampala or Entebbe. A private vehicle and dedicated driver-guide keep the pace flexible, balancing exploration with relaxation.

Highlights

  • Murchison Falls and the Nile: Take a savannah game drive, a Nile boat cruise and a visit to the top of the falls.
  • Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale: Follow trained guides beneath the forest canopy in search of a habituated chimpanzee community.
  • Queen Elizabeth and Kazinga Channel: Combine savannah game drives with a boat cruise past hippos, crocodiles and elephants.
  • Ishasha tree-climbing lions: Search the fig trees for lions, though sightings cannot be guaranteed.
  • Gorilla trekking in Bwindi: Spend a ranger-guided day in the rainforest watching a habituated mountain gorilla family.
  • Lake Bunyonyi: Relax for two nights among terraced hills and islands, with optional canoeing and community visits.
  • Lake Mburo: See zebras, impalas, elands and giraffes among acacia woodland and open grassland.

  • Tour durationFull day by road
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Murchison Falls National Park

Your Bespoke Safaris driver-guide picks you up in the morning at Entebbe International Airport, your hotel or an agreed place in Kampala, and gives you a short briefing before you head north. You pass rural settlements, roadside markets and cultivated land as the scenery changes towards Murchison Falls National Park.

Depending on your departure time and route, you may stop for lunch in Masindi. An optional visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary can be arranged for guided rhino tracking on foot, subject to timing, availability and an extra charge, and is a good addition if you want to see Uganda’s southern white rhinos.

You reach your lodge later in the day, settle in and have dinner in the quiet of the wilderness.

  • Tour durationMorning game drive and afternoon boat cruise
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Murchison Falls National Park

After an early breakfast you set out on a guided game drive across the park’s northern savannah plains. As the morning light spreads over the grassland, your guide helps you look for elephants, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, hartebeests and, with luck, lions or leopards. Sightings vary with the season, weather and animal movements, so each drive is different.

You return to the lodge for lunch and a rest before the afternoon boat cruise on the Victoria Nile. As the boat heads towards the base of Murchison Falls, look for hippos in the water, Nile crocodiles on the banks, elephants visiting the river and many waterbirds. The sound of the falls grows louder as you approach. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

  • Tour durationEarly start and full day by road
  • AccommodationLodge near Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast you visit the top of Murchison Falls, where the Nile is forced through a narrow rocky gorge before plunging into the churning water below. From the designated viewpoints you see the river’s power, feel the spray and take photographs of one of Uganda’s most dramatic natural sights.

You then begin the long journey south-west towards Kibale Forest National Park, through changing countryside, small towns, cultivated hills and rural communities that show everyday life beyond the main tourist centres. Because this is a long transfer, an early start is recommended, with meal and rest stops on the way. You reach the Kibale area later in the day, check in and prepare for tomorrow’s chimpanzee tracking.

  • Tour durationMorning tracking and free afternoon
  • AccommodationLodge near Kibale Forest National Park

Today you enter the tropical rainforest of Kibale, one of Uganda’s best-known places to track wild chimpanzees. After breakfast you report to the visitor centre for a briefing by the park team, then enter the forest with trained guides and trackers to look for a habituated chimpanzee community.

As you walk beneath the canopy, listen for calls in the trees, watch for movement in the branches and notice other signs of forest life. When the chimpanzees are found, you watch them within the rules and time limits set by the park authorities. You may see them feeding, grooming, travelling or interacting. Sightings and the length of the walk cannot be guaranteed, because the animals move freely.

You return to the lodge for lunch and a rest. Depending on your interests and time, you can add a guided walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for wetland birds, monkeys, plants and community-led conservation. Dinner and a quiet evening near the forest.

  • Tour durationDrive and optional afternoon game drive
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast you leave Kibale for Queen Elizabeth National Park. The drive gives views of the Fort Portal region, rolling countryside and, when the weather allows, the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Near the park the landscape opens into savannah, woodland, crater lakes and wide views across the western rift valley.

You check in at your lodge, with time for lunch and a short rest. If your arrival time allows, you take an introductory afternoon game drive in a suitable part of the park, looking for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, waterbucks and warthogs while your guide explains the habitats and wildlife. If the transfer runs long, the game drive can be skipped so you arrive comfortably. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

  • Tour durationMorning game drive and afternoon boat cruise
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park

You start early with a game drive across the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, exploring wildlife-rich tracks for elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, warthogs and lions. The open landscape is good for photography, although sightings depend on natural conditions and animal movements.

You return to the lodge for breakfast or a relaxed mid-morning break, then head to the Kazinga Channel for a boat cruise on the waterway that links Lake Edward and Lake George. From the water you may see large groups of hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants drinking along the shore and many birds resting or feeding. The cruise is a highlight for photographers and birders, because it brings you close to wildlife without a long walk.

You return to the lodge to relax and have dinner.

  • Tour durationGame drive and full day by road
  • AccommodationLodge in the confirmed Bwindi trekking sector

After breakfast you travel to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, known for lions that sometimes rest in fig trees. You explore suitable tracks and scan the surrounding savannah for elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and the tree-climbing lions. These sightings are not guaranteed, so this is a wildlife search rather than a promised encounter.

You continue south towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park through the countryside of south-western Uganda, where the landscape becomes hillier, with terraced gardens, small settlements and forested slopes. Your arrival point and lodge depend on the gorilla trekking sector assigned to your permit.

You check in, have dinner and receive practical guidance for tomorrow’s trek. Prepare your walking boots, rain jacket and drinking water, and get a good night’s sleep.

  • Tour durationTrek of several hours
  • AccommodationLodge in the confirmed Bwindi trekking sector

Today is given to mountain gorilla trekking in the ancient rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After an early breakfast you report to your trekking centre for registration, a briefing and allocation to a gorilla group under the park authorities’ procedures. Experienced rangers and trackers lead you into the forest to find a habituated mountain gorilla family.

The trek can take a few hours or much of the day, depending on where the gorillas are and the terrain. The trails pass dense vegetation, towering trees and birdsong. When the gorillas are found, you have a strictly regulated viewing period from the permitted distance, watching them feed, rest and interact as a family. The encounter calls for patience, respect and care for the conservation rules.

After the trek you return to the briefing point and your lodge, and spend the rest of the day resting or enjoying the forest. Dinner and overnight in Bwindi. Gorilla permits are limited and must be secured in advance, with the sector and lodge coordinated to the confirmed permit.

  • Tour durationScenic drive and relaxed afternoon
  • AccommodationLodge at Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast you leave the rainforest and travel to Lake Bunyonyi, one of south-western Uganda’s most picturesque highland lakes. The road winds through green hills, terraced farmland and rural communities with beautiful views along the way.

You check in at your lakeside accommodation and have lunch while taking in the calm scenery. The afternoon is deliberately relaxed, so you can recover after the physical demands of the gorilla trek. Depending on your lodge and interests, you can enjoy the view across the water, take photographs, read by the shore or simply soak up the atmosphere.

Lake Bunyonyi is known for its many small islands and steep surrounding hills, a fine contrast to the wildlife-focused days before. Dinner and a restful night by the lake.

  • Tour durationRelaxed day at the lake
  • AccommodationLodge at Lake Bunyonyi

After a leisurely breakfast overlooking the lake, you discover Lake Bunyonyi at a relaxed pace. An optional guided canoe excursion explores the island-dotted water and gives views of the surrounding hills, and your guide shares information about local life, the landscape and the communities around the lake.

Depending on availability and your preferences, you can also arrange a guided village walk or cultural visit to learn about local traditions, farming, crafts and daily life in the highlands. Such visits are organised respectfully and with local participation.

Or keep the day free for rest, photography, birdwatching or simply enjoying the lakeside. The extra night lets you experience the lake without rushing and makes the overall itinerary more comfortable for long-haul travellers. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon game drive
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast you leave Lake Bunyonyi for Lake Mburo National Park through the rolling hills of south-western Uganda and the changing landscapes of Ankole, with chances for short breaks on the way.

You reach Lake Mburo in time for lunch, depending on road conditions and your departure time. After checking in, you head out on an afternoon game drive through the park’s acacia woodland and open grassland. Lake Mburo is known for zebras, impalas, elands, topis, buffaloes and warthogs, and giraffes may be seen in suitable areas. It is a landscape distinct from the larger savannah parks earlier in the trip.

Depending on your lodge location and the timing, you may visit a scenic viewpoint or simply relax at the lodge after the drive. Dinner and overnight near the park, with one day of the journey still ahead.

  • Tour durationFull day by road

After breakfast you check out and begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe through western and central Uganda, passing rural communities, farms and roadside trading centres. A stop for refreshments or lunch can be arranged on the way.

If your schedule allows, you can include a short stop at the Equator crossing near Kayabwe for photographs and a break. You continue to your agreed drop-off point, either your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe International Airport, which brings your Uganda Grand Explorer to a close.

If you are catching an international flight on the same day, plan a generous time buffer, because road travel can be affected by traffic and other delays. Where flight times require it, an extra night near Entebbe may be the more comfortable choice.

This itinerary is a guide. Driving times depend on road and weather conditions, and your chimpanzee and gorilla permits decide the trekking dates and Bwindi sector.
