Overview

Uganda from East to West and North to South

This twenty-five-day safari explores Uganda from east to west and north to south, for travellers who want the country’s diversity beyond its most famous attractions. It brings together the River Nile, waterfalls, remote wilderness, savannah game drives, tropical rainforests, primate encounters, mountain gorilla trekking, birdwatching, cultural experiences and relaxing lakeside stays.

It starts around Entebbe with shoebill birdwatching at Mabamba Wetland and a visit to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, then heads east to Jinja and Sipi Falls. It continues into the remote north-east, through Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park, and across northern Uganda to Murchison Falls.

The western leg covers chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, Semuliki and the Sempaya hot springs, then Queen Elizabeth National Park and Ishasha, mountain gorillas in Bwindi, golden monkeys in Mgahinga, Lake Bunyonyi and a final wildlife experience at Lake Mburo.

Highlights

  • Shoebill at Mabamba Wetland: Search for the shoebill by boat through papyrus channels with a local birding guide.
  • Jinja and Sipi Falls: Visit the source of the Nile, then hike to waterfalls and join a coffee experience in the eastern highlands.
  • Pian Upe and Kidepo Valley: Explore remote north-eastern wilderness, with two full days of game viewing in Kidepo.
  • Murchison Falls: See the Top of the Falls viewpoint, a morning game drive and a Nile boat cruise.
  • Chimpanzees, gorillas and golden monkeys: Track primates in Kibale, Bwindi and Mgahinga, plus Semuliki's lowland rainforest.
  • Queen Elizabeth and Lake Mburo: Take game drives, a Kazinga Channel cruise and a search for tree-climbing lions in Ishasha.

  • Tour durationArrival and briefing
  • AccommodationMid-range hotel in Entebbe

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport you are welcomed by your professional driver-guide from Bespoke Safaris and transferred to your hotel in Entebbe, a relaxed lakeside town on the northern shores of Lake Victoria. Depending on your arrival time you can take a short orientation drive, explore the town or rest after your journey. If you arrive early, a visit to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens or a lakeshore walk can be arranged.

In the evening your guide briefs you on the route, the activities ahead and preparations for the journey across Uganda. Dinner and a restful night.

  • Tour durationMorning boat excursion
  • AccommodationMid-range hotel in Entebbe

After an early breakfast you drive to Mabamba Wetland, an extensive wetland on the shores of Lake Victoria and one of Uganda’s best-known places to see the shoebill. The excursion normally involves a transfer to the launch point, then a guided canoe or motorised boat trip through narrow channels bordered by papyrus.

With a local birding guide you search for the shoebill, a large-billed bird with a prehistoric look. You may also see kingfishers, herons, egrets, cormorants and other wetland species. Sightings depend on the birds’ movements, water conditions and the time of day. Your guide explains how wetland conservation relates to fishing, farming and local livelihoods.

You return towards Entebbe for lunch and a relaxed afternoon, with time for the lakeshore or a local craft shop.

  • Tour durationBoat trip and sanctuary visit
  • AccommodationMid-range hotel in Entebbe

After breakfast you transfer to the departure point for your boat journey to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Lake Victoria, which cares for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees that cannot safely return to the wild. The visit explains chimpanzee welfare, rehabilitation, conservation education and the challenges facing great apes.

On arrival you receive an introduction to the sanctuary’s work. Subject to the day’s programme and access arrangements, you watch the chimpanzees from the visitor viewing area during their scheduled feeding or activity period, while staff explain individual histories, social behaviour and the threats from habitat loss, illegal wildlife trade and human-wildlife conflict. It is a useful complement to the wild chimpanzee trekking in Kibale later in the trip.

You return by boat to the mainland and your hotel, with the rest of the afternoon to relax or enjoy a meal overlooking Lake Victoria.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon boat excursion
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in Jinja

After breakfast you leave Entebbe for Jinja in eastern Uganda, driving through the greater Kampala area and the eastern countryside, past trading centres, cultivated land and communities. You check in at your lodge in Jinja and have lunch.

In the afternoon you visit the Source of the Nile area for a guided introduction to the river’s significance and the history of exploration here, with a boat excursion where available to enjoy the river scenery, fishing activity and birdlife.

Jinja is also known for adventure, with white-water rafting, kayaking and river excursions on the Nile. If you prefer something gentler you can explore the town, visit craft shops or watch the sunset from a riverside spot. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

  • Tour durationFree day with optional activities
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in Jinja

Today is for discovering more of Jinja and the River Nile region. After breakfast you choose activities to suit your interests and comfort level. Adventure seekers can opt for guided white-water rafting, kayaking or another Nile activity, which should be booked in advance and depends on operator schedules, safety requirements and river conditions.

You can instead enjoy a gentler boat trip, explore Jinja town, visit local markets or learn about the region’s history and communities. Your guide can arrange a cultural stop or a visit to a local craft business, subject to availability.

Lunch is at a selected restaurant or lodge, and the afternoon is free for another activity or for relaxing by the river. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

  • Tour durationDrive to the Mount Elgon foothills
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in Sipi

After breakfast you leave Jinja for Sipi Falls in the foothills of Mount Elgon, through eastern Uganda’s farmland and communities and then up into the cooler highlands of Kapchorwa.

You check in at your lodge and have lunch. Depending on arrival time, you can take a short walk around the countryside or relax and enjoy the views across the plains and hills. Sipi is known for its series of waterfalls, scenic hiking trails and fertile slopes where coffee is grown, and on a clear day the views over the eastern lowlands are spectacular.

Your guide introduces the area’s geography and helps plan tomorrow’s waterfall hike to suit your fitness and interests. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

  • Tour durationGuided hike and coffee experience
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in Sipi

After breakfast you set out with a local guide to explore the Sipi Falls area. The hike passes rural settlements, cultivated slopes and footpaths to viewpoints over the falls. The region is known for three principal waterfalls, and the route depends on your fitness, the weather and the time available. Some paths are steep or slippery, particularly after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Later you enjoy a guided coffee experience, where available, learning about the cultivation and processing of Arabica coffee from harvesting and drying to roasting and brewing, and the role coffee plays in household incomes here.

After lunch you can enjoy the scenery or visit a community enterprise or craft producer, subject to availability. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon wildlife drive
  • AccommodationConfirmed lodge, reserve accommodation or suitable accommodation near Pian Upe

After an early breakfast you leave Sipi for Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, travelling north through eastern Uganda towards the Karamoja region. Mountain scenery gradually gives way to open plains and dry savannah.

Pian Upe is a distinctive, less developed and more remote safari destination than Uganda’s better-known national parks. You check in, have lunch and, depending on arrival time and access conditions, set out on an afternoon wildlife drive with an experienced local guide across the open plains in search of antelopes, oribi, eland and other species, with broad views to the surrounding mountains and distinctive birdlife.

Accommodation is basic and some tracks are rough, so a capable 4×4 and realistic expectations about facilities matter. Sightings depend on season, habitat conditions and animal movements. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationMorning game drive and optional cultural visit
  • AccommodationConfirmed lodge, reserve accommodation or suitable accommodation near Pian Upe

You rise early for a morning game drive across Pian Upe’s open plains, when the cooler hours are best for wildlife and scenery. Your guide explains the reserve’s ecosystems, conservation challenges and the importance of protecting its wildlife corridors.

Depending on current local arrangements you may also take a guided nature walk in an authorised area or a birdwatching excursion, as the open landscapes and wetland habitats in the wider region suit bird enthusiasts.

After lunch an optional cultural visit can be arranged with a local Karamoja community, offering insight into pastoral traditions, livelihoods, crafts and the relationship between communities and the environment. It is arranged respectfully through local hosts, with permission sought before taking photographs. Dinner and overnight, ready for the journey north tomorrow.

  • Tour durationLong drive
  • AccommodationLodge or safari camp near Kidepo Valley National Park

After breakfast you leave Pian Upe and travel north through Karamoja towards Kidepo Valley National Park. This is a substantial road journey, so the day is planned around road conditions, rest stops and your accommodation arrangements.

The scenery shows the character of north-eastern Uganda, with wide plains, rugged hills, traditional settlements and expansive views, and your guide introduces the region’s cultural heritage and conservation landscape.

Depending on departure time and road conditions you arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon or evening. After check-in you have dinner and rest before the next day’s wildlife activities.

  • Tour durationFull-day game drive
  • AccommodationLodge or safari camp near Kidepo Valley National Park

After an early breakfast you head into Kidepo Valley National Park for a full day of wildlife exploration. The park is celebrated for its remote location, dramatic mountain scenery and broad savannah valleys, which give it a distinctive wilderness atmosphere.

On the morning drive you explore tracks through the Narus Valley, a key wildlife-viewing area, where you may see elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and other savannah species. Lions and leopards may also be present, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.

You have lunch back at the lodge or a picnic in an authorised spot, then continue in the afternoon, taking in the scenery, birdlife and wildlife behaviour while your guide explains the area’s ecology. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationGame drive and optional cultural visit
  • AccommodationLodge or safari camp near Kidepo Valley National Park

After an early breakfast you set out on another wildlife excursion in Kidepo. Depending on park conditions, the day may include more game viewing in the Narus Valley or a visit to another accessible area of the park, chosen by your guide according to wildlife movements, road conditions and time.

The landscape is a large part of the experience, with rugged mountains and open valleys giving a striking backdrop for photography and birdwatching. Your guide helps you see how Kidepo differs from the other savannah parks on this safari.

In the afternoon an optional cultural encounter with a local community can be arranged through appropriate local hosts, offering insight into regional traditions and livelihoods while supporting community-led tourism. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationTravel day
  • AccommodationMid-range hotel in Gulu

After breakfast you leave Kidepo for Gulu in northern Uganda. This is mainly a travel day that breaks the long journey between the north-east and Murchison Falls National Park, instead of one exhausting drive.

You travel through northern Uganda’s landscapes, passing rural settlements and farmland, with rest stops and lunch along the way depending on the route and conditions.

In Gulu you check in at your hotel and have the rest of the afternoon free. If time allows, you can take a short orientation drive or visit a local market with your guide. Dinner and overnight in Gulu.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon viewpoint visit
  • AccommodationLodge or safari camp in or near Murchison Falls National Park

After breakfast you leave Gulu for Murchison Falls National Park, heading for the Victoria Nile and one of Uganda’s most spectacular natural attractions. You enter the park, continue towards the accommodation area and, depending on arrival time, have lunch before visiting the Top of the Falls viewpoint.

There you watch the Nile force its way through a narrow rocky gorge before plunging downstream. The powerful water, surrounding cliffs and spray make a dramatic scene and excellent photographs, and your guide explains the geology of the falls and their place in the wider river ecosystem.

You then transfer to your lodge or safari camp. Dinner and overnight, ready for a full day of wildlife activities.

  • Tour durationMorning game drive and afternoon boat cruise
  • AccommodationLodge or safari camp in or near Murchison Falls National Park

You rise early for a morning game drive across the northern savannah sector of Murchison Falls National Park, home to elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, Uganda kob, hartebeest and other wildlife. With luck you may see lions or leopards. Your guide explains the park’s habitats and animal behaviour.

After the drive you return to your lodge for a late breakfast, a rest and lunch. In the afternoon you take a boat cruise on the Victoria Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls. The banks attract hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants and many waterbirds, and the boat gives a different perspective on the park and good chances for photography.

Depending on the confirmed cruise arrangement you may see the falls from the water before returning to shore. The cruise and the Top of the Falls viewpoint complement each other as two views of the same feature. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationLong drive
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge near Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast you check out and leave Murchison Falls National Park for Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda. This is another substantial road journey, so an early departure is recommended.

The route crosses agricultural landscapes, rural trading centres and changing countryside towards the Fort Portal region, and your guide coordinates rest stops and lunch on the way.

You check in at your lodge in the Kibale area and have time to relax, perhaps with a short walk or views of the surrounding forest and countryside. Your guide briefs you on tomorrow’s chimpanzee trekking and the park guidelines for wildlife encounters. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationMorning trek and afternoon nature walk
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge near Kibale Forest National Park

After an early breakfast you transfer to the Kibale Forest National Park briefing point. After a briefing by the rangers you enter the forest with an experienced guide to search for a habituated chimpanzee community. Your guide interprets the vegetation, birdlife and other signs of wildlife as you walk. Chimpanzees move through the forest looking for food, so the length of the trek varies. Once found, you spend the permitted viewing period watching their social interactions, feeding and movement in the trees.

After the trek you return for lunch, then continue to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided nature walk, subject to the confirmed arrangements. The wetland is known for its birdlife, vegetation and other primates, and a local guide explains its ecological importance and its relationship with surrounding communities, showing how community-based conservation supports local livelihoods.

You return to your lodge in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationDay excursion
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in the Fort Portal or Kibale area

After breakfast you drive to Semuliki National Park in the Semuliki Valley, on the western side of the Rwenzori Mountains. The landscape changes as you descend into a warmer lowland environment of tropical forest with a distinctive range of plants and animals.

You meet your local ranger guide for a guided forest walk on a suitable trail. Semuliki is notable for its lowland tropical rainforest, its birdlife and its biological links to the forests of Central Africa, so it feels quite different from Kibale and Bwindi.

A highlight is the Sempaya hot springs. You follow the designated trail to learn about the geothermal activity and the cultural stories linked to the site, staying within visitor areas and following safety instructions. Longer forest or birding trails need more time and should be arranged separately if they are a priority.

After lunch you return towards your lodge in the Fort Portal area. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon game drive
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast you leave the Fort Portal area for Queen Elizabeth National Park, passing scenic countryside and communities before reaching the park’s savannah landscapes.

You check in at your lodge and have lunch. If time allows, you head out on an afternoon game drive through a suitable wildlife-viewing area, where you may see elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, waterbucks, warthogs and other savannah species, and lions depending on their movements. Your guide explains how the park’s grasslands, woodlands, wetlands and lakes support its wildlife, and the birdlife around the water is a highlight.

You return to your lodge in the evening. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationMorning game drive and afternoon boat cruise
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park

You begin with an early game drive on the Kasenyi Plains, one of Queen Elizabeth National Park’s best-known wildlife-viewing areas, exploring the grasslands for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, waterbucks and other species. Predators may be seen, but sightings depend on wildlife movements and conditions.

You return to your lodge for breakfast, a short rest and lunch. In the afternoon you take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake George and Lake Edward. The channel attracts hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and a wide variety of birds, with close views from the boat and an explanation of the channel’s importance to the park’s ecosystem.

You return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationGame drive and drive to Bwindi
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge near the confirmed Bwindi trekking sector

After breakfast you drive to the Ishasha sector in the south of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for tree-climbing lions that are sometimes seen resting in large fig trees. Your guide explores suitable tracks for the lions while also looking for elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and other wildlife. The open savannah, woodland and fig trees feel different from Kasenyi, and although the tree-climbing lions are a major attraction, sightings are not guaranteed.

After the game drive you continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park through the scenic highlands of south-western Uganda, with cultivated hillsides and rural communities along the way.

You check in at a lodge near your confirmed gorilla trekking sector. Bwindi has several sectors, so accommodation and transport must match the location of your gorilla permit. Dinner and an early night before tomorrow’s trek.

  • Tour durationTrek of several hours
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge near the confirmed Bwindi trekking sector

After an early breakfast you transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by the ranger guides on trekking procedures, forest safety and the conservation guidelines that protect these endangered primates.

With experienced rangers and trackers you enter the forest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. The terrain can be steep, muddy and physically demanding, and the length of the trek depends on where the gorillas are and how they move. Once found, you spend the permitted one hour with them, watching family members feed, groom, rest and interact, and learning why the surrounding forest needs protecting.

After the trek you return to the park headquarters and transfer to your lodge for lunch or a late meal. The rest of the afternoon is for relaxing, and an optional community experience can be arranged at an additional cost. Dinner and overnight.

  • Tour durationMorning tracking and optional cultural visit
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in the Kisoro or Lake Bunyonyi area, depending on the confirmed schedule

After breakfast you transfer towards Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the Virunga volcanic region of south-western Uganda. Depending on where you stayed and your trekking arrangements, the journey may take several hours, so an early start is recommended.

At the park headquarters you receive a ranger briefing before golden monkey tracking. With experienced guides you enter the bamboo forest in search of these endangered, lively primates, known for their golden-orange fur. Once the troop is found, you have the permitted viewing period to watch their feeding and social behaviour, a different primate encounter from the gorilla trek.

Subject to time, availability and the agreed package, you may also join a Batwa cultural heritage experience, a community-led visit on Batwa history, forest knowledge, traditions and the changes in access to ancestral forest, arranged respectfully through recognised hosts.

You then transfer to your accommodation in the Kisoro or Lake Bunyonyi area. If the tracking and visit finish late, an overnight near Mgahinga may be more comfortable, with the Lake Bunyonyi transfer the next morning.

  • Tour durationLakeside visit and drive
  • AccommodationMid-range lodge in or near Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast, if you stayed near Kisoro, you enjoy a scenic visit to Lake Bunyonyi, surrounded by terraced hills and dotted with islands, one of south-western Uganda’s most beautiful landscapes. Depending on arrival time and arrangements, you can take a boat excursion or a relaxed lakeside break, with a local guide introducing the scenery, nearby communities and the lake’s role in local livelihoods. A short walk or simply enjoying the views are alternatives.

After lunch you drive to Lake Mburo National Park through the highlands and farmland of south-western Uganda, reaching the savannah and woodland around the park. You check in at your lodge. If you arrive early enough and park access allows, you can take a short evening game drive, as Lake Mburo is known for zebras, impalas, giraffes, elands, buffaloes and many birds. Otherwise you relax and prepare for the morning’s wildlife activity.

Dinner and overnight near Lake Mburo National Park.

  • Tour durationMorning activity and long drive

You start the final day with an early breakfast and a morning game drive in Lake Mburo National Park, exploring its savannah, woodland and lake habitats for zebras, giraffes, impalas, elands, buffaloes and other wildlife.

Subject to availability, park rules and your departure schedule, a guided nature walk with an authorised ranger can be arranged instead or as well, giving another view of the landscape, with animal tracks, vegetation and smaller details of the ecosystem.

You then return to the lodge, check out and begin the journey to Entebbe. If time allows, you can stop at the Uganda Equator crossing in Kayabwe for photographs, a short visit and local craft shops. You continue to Entebbe International Airport or your preferred hotel. Because this final transfer is long, the schedule suits travellers with a late-evening international flight. For an earlier flight, the Lake Mburo activity or overnight arrangements should be adjusted, or an extra night added.

Your 25-day Uganda safari ends with memories of the Nile, the eastern highlands, remote Karamoja, northern savannahs, tropical rainforests, mountain gorillas and the lakes of the south-west.

This itinerary is a guide. Wildlife sightings depend on natural conditions, remote areas have simpler facilities and rougher roads, and your permits decide the trekking dates and the Bwindi sector.
