Overview

Shoebills, Forest Specialists and Savannah Birds

This nine-day safari is a carefully planned journey through Uganda’s best birding habitats: papyrus wetlands, open savannah, freshwater lakes and tropical rainforest. It is designed for international birders, specialist tour operators and nature photographers.

You begin at Mabamba Wetland on the shore of Lake Victoria, searching for the Shoebill, then continue to Lake Mburo, Kibale Forest and Queen Elizabeth National Park. With experienced birding guides and flexible observation periods, the programme puts meaningful time in the field ahead of rushing between destinations, and each outing is adapted to bird activity, weather and the group’s interests.

Along the way you also see Uganda’s wider wildlife and landscapes, including zebras, elephants, hippos and primates.

Highlights

  • Shoebill search at Mabamba: Explore the papyrus channels by local motorised canoe in search of Uganda's signature wetland bird.
  • Lake Mburo birding: Search acacia woodland, grassland, rocky outcrops and wetland edges for rollers, bee-eaters, hornbills and the African Finfoot.
  • Kibale forest birding: Spend a full day in the tropical forest for species such as the Great Blue Turaco, African Grey Parrot and Yellow-spotted Barbet.
  • Queen Elizabeth habitats: Bird the savannah, crater-lake and wetland habitats of the park for raptors, rollers, storks and open-country species.
  • Kazinga Channel boat excursion: Watch pelicans, fish eagles, herons and cormorants from the water, alongside the channel's hippos.
  • Expert guiding and photography: Benefit from experienced birding guides, flexible observation periods and time for nature photography.
  • Wider wildlife: See zebras, impalas, elephants, buffaloes and primates alongside the birdlife.

9 days · 8 nights

  • Tour durationArrival and introductory birding
  • AccommodationAccommodation in Entebbe

You arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where your Bespoke Safaris representative welcomes you and transfers you to your accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, you enjoy a relaxed introductory birding session around the lodge gardens, nearby wetlands or suitable spots on the Lake Victoria shoreline.

This first outing lets you begin to get familiar with Uganda’s birdlife, including common waterbirds, kingfishers, weavers and sunbirds. Your birding guide discusses the route, expected habitats, target species and your photography preferences. The evening is for dinner, rest and preparation for an early start tomorrow.

  • Tour durationEarly morning excursion
  • AccommodationAccommodation in Entebbe

You start early with a dedicated excursion to Mabamba Bay Wetland, one of Uganda’s best-known birdwatching destinations. You explore the papyrus channels by local motorised canoe with an experienced guide, looking for the Shoebill, the signature bird of this habitat. Sightings cannot be guaranteed, but a patient early-morning search is a worthwhile chance to see this prehistoric-looking bird in its natural environment.

You may also see African jacanas, malachite kingfishers, African marsh harriers, herons, egrets, cormorants and other wetland specialists, depending on conditions. Your guide helps identify calls, feeding behaviour and habitat preferences, and allows time for careful observation and photography.

You return to Entebbe for lunch and a flexible afternoon that can include more birding around suitable lakeshore or garden habitats.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon birding
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast you leave for Lake Mburo National Park in western Uganda. The drive crosses cultivated countryside, settlements, cattle farms and open grasslands, and where time and road conditions allow you make selected stops to watch birds on the way.

You reach the Lake Mburo area in time for lunch and an afternoon birding session in the park or surrounding habitats. The mix of acacia woodland, savannah, rocky outcrops and wetland edges supports a good variety of species. With your guide, look for colourful rollers, bee-eaters, hornbills, lapwings, raptors, starlings and other woodland and grassland birds.

Zebras, impalas, buffaloes and elands add to the photographic opportunities. You return to your lodge at the end of the day to review sightings and prepare for a full morning in the field.

  • Tour durationFull day in the field
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Lake Mburo National Park

You spend the day exploring Lake Mburo’s different birding habitats at a pace that suits the group. An early start gives the best chance to see active birds before the heat of the day, with attention to woodland edges, open grassland, lakeside vegetation and other productive spots.

Target species may include the African Finfoot, African Fish Eagle, African Wattled Lapwing, Rufous-naped Lark, Bare-faced Go-away-bird and a range of weavers, cisticolas and raptors. What you actually see depends on the season, water levels and local bird activity. Your guide helps separate similar species and record sightings if you keep a bird list.

After a break in the warmer hours, you go out again in the afternoon, either on a guided walk in an authorised area, if available and appropriate, or on a vehicle-based outing to other habitats. The full day leaves time for patient observation, photography and returning to promising locations.

  • Tour durationTransfer and forest-edge birding
  • AccommodationLodge near Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast you leave Lake Mburo and travel towards Kibale Forest National Park through western Uganda’s farmland, tea plantations and green hills. It is a transfer day, but your guide can arrange occasional birding stops where safe and practical, especially in suitable woodland or wetland along the route.

On arrival you settle in and have lunch, then take an afternoon forest-edge birding session, depending on your arrival time. Kibale is very different from Lake Mburo, with dense tropical forest, mature trees, clearings and surrounding community landscapes. You start searching for forest species and listening for calls in the canopy and undergrowth.

Your guide introduces the birding options in the area and plans tomorrow around your target species and preferred level of activity. Kibale is also home to chimpanzees and other primates, which adds to the forest experience.

  • Tour durationFull day in the forest
  • AccommodationLodge near Kibale Forest National Park

You dedicate the day to Kibale’s forest habitats with a knowledgeable birding guide. Depending on permits, access arrangements and local conditions, the outing takes place on authorised forest trails and suitable forest-edge routes. Kibale is celebrated for its birdlife, and possible targets include the Great Blue Turaco, African Grey Parrot, Yellow-spotted Barbet, African Pitta, Black Bee-eater and various greenbuls, flycatchers and hornbills.

Some birds are easier to detect by their calls than by sight, so your guide helps interpret vocalisations and find activity in the canopy and understorey. You have generous time for quiet observation, photography and checking field-guide details.

A midday break gives you a chance to rest and review the morning’s sightings, followed by another outing when conditions allow. Chimpanzee tracking can be arranged as an optional activity, subject to availability and the group’s priorities, but the programme stays focused on birding.

  • Tour durationDrive and afternoon birding drive
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast you travel south towards Queen Elizabeth National Park, where the landscape opens into savannah plains, crater-lake country, woodland and wetlands. The change of habitat gives you a chance to see birds in a very different setting.

On arrival you check in and have lunch, then take an afternoon birding drive in a suitable section of the park. The species you see depend on the area, but the park’s varied habitats support raptors, rollers, bee-eaters, storks, herons, plovers and many savannah and wetland birds. You may also come across elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs and other wildlife.

Your guide chooses stops according to recent sightings, seasonal conditions and your target list. You return to the lodge in the evening and discuss plans for tomorrow.

  • Tour durationMorning birding drive and boat excursion
  • AccommodationLodge in or near Queen Elizabeth National Park

You start with an early-morning birding drive, when many species are active. You explore selected savannah and woodland habitats for birds such as African Wattled Lapwings, Grey Crowned Cranes where present, various eagles, vultures, rollers and other open-country species.

After breakfast or a short rest, you take a boat excursion on the Kazinga Channel, the waterway that links Lake Edward and Lake George. From the water you can watch and photograph waterbirds along the banks, including pelicans, African Fish Eagles, cormorants, herons and egrets, depending on the season. The channel is also known for its hippos and other wildlife, so the trip is rewarding beyond birdwatching.

The afternoon can be used for more birding near the lodge, around the crater lakes or in another suitable habitat, subject to travel time and access. This last full day is a chance to refine your bird list.

  • Tour durationFull day by road

After breakfast you begin the return journey to Entebbe for your onward flight. Depending on your departure schedule, road conditions and the time available, there may be chances for brief birding stops along the way.

For international flights, allow a generous transfer window, because the drive from Queen Elizabeth National Park to Entebbe is long and travel times vary. On arrival, your guide helps with the airport transfer and departure arrangements.

You leave Uganda with memories of its wetlands, rainforest, lakes and savannahs, and a bird list shaped by the species you met along the way.

This itinerary is a guide. Outings are adapted to bird activity, weather and habitat conditions, and sightings, including the Shoebill, can never be guaranteed.
