  • Tour durationArrival and city introduction
  • AccommodationHotel in Kigali

On arrival at Kigali International Airport you are welcomed by your Bespoke Safaris representative and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you can rest after your flight or take a gentle introduction to Kigali, a city of green hills, orderly streets and a lively atmosphere.

If time permits, you can take a short drive through selected neighbourhoods, visit a local craft market or enjoy your first taste of Rwandan cuisine. Your guide reviews the safari arrangements, including the planned border crossing and your confirmed primate-tracking permits, so you are well prepared for the days ahead. Dinner at leisure.

  • Tour durationScenic drive
  • AccommodationLodge near Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast you leave Kigali and travel north towards Volcanoes National Park through Rwanda’s countryside. The route passes rolling green hills, cultivated slopes, small trading centres and rural settlements, with chances to stop for photographs, stretch your legs and see everyday life.

On arrival in the Musanze area you check in at your lodge near the Virunga volcanic mountains. The afternoon is for relaxing, enjoying the mountain views and preparing for tomorrow’s golden monkey tracking. Your guide confirms the reporting arrangements and reminds you to follow the park rangers’ instructions.

  • Tour durationMorning tracking and free afternoon
  • AccommodationLodge near Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast you go to the park headquarters for registration, a briefing and instructions from the ranger guides. You then enter the forested slopes of Volcanoes National Park in search of the endangered golden monkeys, recognised by their golden-orange markings and lively behaviour.

Moving through the bamboo forest, you watch for groups feeding, climbing, leaping between branches and interacting in their natural habitat. It is a good chance for photography and a closer look at the biodiversity of the Virunga region. The length and difficulty of the walk depend on where the monkeys are found and on the conditions that day.

You return to the lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon. Depending on your interests, you can explore the local area, visit a community craft centre or simply rest against the backdrop of the volcanic mountains. Tracking arrangements and park access are confirmed in advance.

  • Tour durationFull day by road and border crossing
  • AccommodationLodge in the confirmed Bwindi trekking sector

After breakfast you leave northern Rwanda and travel towards the Cyanika border crossing, subject to the final route and border arrangements. You complete immigration formalities before continuing into south-western Uganda. The journey passes spectacular highland scenery, with terraced hillsides, green valleys, cultivated fields and rural communities.

As you near Bwindi, the scenery becomes more forested and mountainous, introducing you to one of Africa’s most celebrated mountain gorilla habitats. You reach your lodge in the sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park that matches your confirmed gorilla permit. You spend the afternoon relaxing, enjoying the surroundings and receiving a briefing about tomorrow’s trek. An early night is recommended.

  • Tour durationTrek of several hours
  • AccommodationLodge in the confirmed Bwindi trekking sector

Today is one of Africa’s most memorable wildlife experiences. After an early breakfast you travel to the designated park headquarters for registration, a ranger briefing and allocation to a trekking group. With trained guides and trackers you enter the dense rainforest and follow the trails in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family.

The walk may take several hours, depending on where the family is, the weather and the forest terrain. When the gorillas are found, you have a strictly regulated viewing period, normally up to one hour, to watch them feed, rest, groom, play and interact. Seeing them in the wild is a moving experience and a powerful lesson in conservation.

After the trek you return to the lodge for lunch and a rest. The afternoon is free to enjoy the forest atmosphere and share photographs. Gorilla permits must be secured for the correct date and sector before you travel.

  • Tour durationFull day by road
  • AccommodationHotel in Kigali

After breakfast at the lodge you begin the return journey to Rwanda. If timing, local arrangements and your schedule allow, the morning can include a guided cultural experience with a Batwa community near Bwindi, with storytelling, traditional music, dance and demonstrations of cultural practices that explain the Batwa people’s heritage and historical relationship with the forest. The visit is arranged respectfully through a recognised community host so that local people benefit.

You then continue to the agreed border crossing and complete exit and entry formalities. The drive through the highlands of south-western Uganda and Rwanda to Kigali takes several hours, so the day is planned around the transfer rather than a full sightseeing programme. On arrival in Kigali you check in at your hotel, have dinner and rest.

  • Tour durationFull day guided city experience
  • AccommodationHotel in Kigali

After breakfast you spend the day discovering Kigali with a guide. If you wish, you visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, honour the victims and understand Rwanda’s journey of remembrance and rebuilding. Please allow time to approach this visit thoughtfully and respectfully.

You continue to selected city landmarks, local neighbourhoods and craft markets, where you can browse handmade products and learn about contemporary Rwandan culture. Your guide can also arrange a stop at a café or restaurant to sample Rwandan cuisine and coffee.

Throughout the day you enjoy views over Kigali’s rolling hills and see the mix of modern development, local enterprise and everyday life. You return to your hotel in the afternoon or early evening for your final night, a fitting contrast to the rainforest and mountain days before.

  • Tour durationTransfer to the airport

After breakfast at your hotel, and depending on your flight schedule, you have time for a final walk, a few souvenirs or a rest before your transfer to Kigali International Airport. Your driver makes sure you leave with plenty of time for check-in and departure formalities.

You take home memories of two distinctive East African countries: golden monkeys in Rwanda’s volcanic forests, mountain gorillas in Uganda’s ancient rainforest, highland scenery, meaningful cultural encounters and Kigali itself.

This itinerary is a guide. Gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking dates depend on permit availability, and the route, border crossing and timings are confirmed in advance.
